Timing Crabgrass Prevention Correctly

Greetings Lawn Folks!

Should I apply Safe 'N Simple Weed Control now that forsythia is blooming?

The short answer is no; it is still too early. The average frost date for our area is May 23. Crabgrass germinates when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees- that's right around May 1-5. Let's back up 2 weeks from this date, making the target application date April 20 (5 days earlier than previously recommended). Anytime earlier means you will have to make a third application, as Safe 'N Simple Weed Control lasts 8-10 weeks, and admittedly it's expensive. Our advise- let Mother Nature's frosts nip any of those annual weeds that try to germinate before May 23.

The second recommended (very important) application of Safe 'N Simple Weed Control does move the date back to June 20, lasting until August 20. The average frost date in the fall is September 23. Again, any crabgrass germinating and growing after August 20 should get killed by frost. However, we say get out there and observe. If you see crabgrass maturing and beginning to set seed, dig it out or spot spray it.

Please remember that if you have been following our all natural Safe 'N Simple Lawn Care Program for several years, your lawn is healthy, and it will out- compete crabgrass to a great extent. An added benefit- you can convert some of that prime real estate to a vegetable garden, because, in combination with Safe'N Simple Lawn Food, you've done it all naturally!

That’s it for now,
