What the Heck is a Bareroot Plant?

A Walla Walla onion—the northern Vidalia onion, and a staple in Judy’s garden.

So, just what are bareroot plants anyway? The short answer: bareroot plants are live plant material without soil. Literally, they are plants with bare roots. For us, that is how our plants like strawberries, onions, asparagus, and more are shipped to the store. You’ll find that farmers and commercial growers receive certain plants like this as well.

Why do we love bareroot plants? Certainly, expense is a big factor! We (and you) are not paying for the higher shipping costs, pots, soil, and a longer period of care. But best of all: Bareroot plants enable us to grow plants like onions, which are a long-season plant (too long for the short growing season up here in the North). When they get to us, these plants are off to a good start and are ready and raring to be planted (we typically receive plants in early April).

Some of the bareroot plant material are annuals (like our onions) and some are perennials (like our berries, asparagus, and rhubarb). If you’re new to planting or looking for advice on how to plant, when to fertilize, when to harvest, and more–feel free to ask us! We even have growing guides for each plant type available on our website

The varieties we have chosen are tried and true, and are highly recommended. We are always sure to make space in our gardens for these delectable fruits and veggies!
