February Musing: Springtime, Bareroot Plants, & Chickens

Greetings fellow gardeners and backyard farmers,

The sun’s angle rises, daylight lengthens. We hear the first territorial calls from cardinals, chickadees, and titmice. Bluebirds vie for the nest box in the vegetable garden. Though still February, spring is in the air. Got the itch to plan your gardens, maybe start a few seeds? Sure sign of fever setting in!

Here at Nashua Farmers’ we also have the bug. Several months ago we placed our order for our ever-popular bare root plant material which is scheduled to arrive here in early April. So now is the time to head on down to our store, pick up your order form, and get excited about planting such delicacies as strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb, asparagus, onions, sweet potatoes, and more. Please note that orders are pre-paid and subject to quantities already ordered by us.

It’s also time to order baby chicks. We will have 6 breeds available this year including one rare breed. She’s the Sapphire Blue Rock and looks to be quite lovely! Again, orders are pre-paid, and these day-old cuties need to be picked up at our store the very day they arrive in early May. Don’t worry- we will call you!

For many years we have dealt with the same suppliers for plants and, of course, a different one for chicks. These folks, no matter our source, are extremely reputable and operate out of state-of-the-art facilities. You can be assured of a quality product- be it plant or animal. All it takes is prompt and tender care from you.

As an aside, there has been quite the buzz about chicken feed these days. We carry only the Blue Seal line of feed for pets and livestock.  On the cutting edge of animal nutrition, Blue Seal formulates its feeds specific to an animal’s needs. When it comes to chickens, chickens rule! From Chick Starter to Extra Egg Pellets (or Crumbles) to Better Feather for moulting recovery, Blue Seal takes the health and well being of your chickens to heart. So please feed these high quality chicken feeds to chickens, and let’s keep goat feed for goats.

That’s it for now. Happy planning!

Judy
